Born in Manchester
The UK’s biggest children’s hospital.
The new Children's Hospital in Manchester is now caring for Manchester's next generation. The new Royal Manchester Children's Hospital is the biggest children's hospital in the UK, with 371 beds. It has purpose-built accommodation with ensuite rooms for carers and families. Children's services relocated from Booth Hall and the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital in Pendlebury, as well as Saint Mary's, to the new Royal Manchester Children's Hospital. The new Children's (Paediatric) Emergency Department provides access for all children with acute illness or injuries. The (Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) has more beds and the capacity to open more in the future. All the beds are equipped with state-of-the-art ventilators and monitoring systems. The High Dependency Unit (HDU) previously had beds across two sites, but now has more beds in one children's hospital with the space to expand. The operating theatres are now together on one site and located with the surgical wards, directly opposite the Elective Treatment Centre (ETC). The majority of patients coming to theatre will come from the ETC which means that patients only have a short distance to travel to and from theatre which will also improve the efficiency of the service. The Children's Radiology Service was previously split between Pendlebury and Booth Hall. Moving to the new site has now brought all of radiology into one department. It contains the latest and newest equipment including an MRI scanner, the latest 128 slice CT scanner, three ultrasound rooms and state-of-the-art digitised X-ray units. Major specialities of the hospital include metabolic disorders, complex spinal, renal transplant and Haematology/Oncology. Care by Parent is a new facility within the new hospital. This is a four bedded unit where children who have been classified as medically fit for discharge but whose parents carry out the care for their child to provide them with more confidence.
